2015 Kit Carson County Fair Wooden Grand Champion
The 2015 Grand Champion Steer at the Kit Carson County Fair sold for $6265...but in 1992 a Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel dog from PTC#13 sold for $174,900, the highest price ever paid for an individual carousel animal. That dog’s “first cousin” was named Grand Champion Wooden Animal during this year’s 2015 County Fair. Four of PTC #6’s hand-carved wooden figures were nominated: the Goat, the Rose Horse, the Dog and the Camel. Persons visiting the carousel could vote (numerous times) for their favorite animal by paying a penny per vote…and the St. Bernard Dog now wears the Grand Champion purple ribbon. PTC #6 is the only surviving PTC menagerie carousel, thus its Dog is the only one carved by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company that still spins proudly on a carousel. The other four dogs know to be carved by PTC are all in private collections.
