Animals Remain at Rest
The Kit Carson County County Carousel’s dog, lion, the colorful hippocampus and their 43 wooden friends still stand quietly waiting for the time when the doors can be opened and the 115 year old Merry-Go-Round can once again go around! As long as COVID continues, there can be no spinning, no hugs from little riders, and no pats on the animals’ broad carved heads. This was the first time since 1938 that the Kit Carson County Carousel did not operate during the County Fair. Though the carousel was not open, the viewing window on the carousel building enabled visitors and wistful riders the opportunity to “take a peek” and wish for better times!
The carousel was also silent from 1931-1937. The Great Depression and the “dust bowl” conditions of those early 1930’s resulted in the County Fair itself being canceled. Fortunately, the 2020 Kit Carson County Fair and Rodeo was able to be held.
As the carousel must remain closed until at least next year, Carousel Christmas cannot be held this year but the carousel building and park will still twinkle with lights as they have over the past decades.
